Caleb Wheeler Curtis (saxophone) + Noah Garabedian (bass) + Vinnie Sperrazza (drums) bring you their debut album, New Year, a collaborative album of improvisations, compositions, sketches, inside jokes, aspirations, dreams, challenges, and possibilities.
New Year embodies the genuinely refreshed and synergistic energy of improvisation made truly in that moment.
NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. - At a time when most albums are driven by a singular leader, New Year stands out as an organically fresh and intriguing collaborative process, with which Sperrazza describes as true “band-hood and non-hierarchical playing.”
New Year is a veritable collaboration through and through. This is the first album the three recorded together, and was a new opportunity to explore their artistry through shared values but free of expectations and ingrained principles.
Creating the music was an authentically honest process. Curtis + Garabedian + Sperrazza account that the process was as much about the time they spent together outside of making music as much as the time they spent playing. The evolution of growing and deepening in non-musical ways was just if not more critical to their shared creativity. This honest progression of growing together is reflected in the trio’s naturalness and not overly complicated sound. The music beckons a searching and reactive to the moment feel that can only be achieved through a deep understanding of your peers.
As any art, this album’s honest and intriguing quality could only exist in the transient moment of a particular place and time. All Brooklyn based artists, their music captures the palpable energy of their shared experiences at this time in history. The music is organized but open and expressive. While they are highly versed in the classic tradition of jazz, their album opens up with the true freedom of improvisation, exploration, and creativity. New Year embodies the genuinely refreshed and synergistic energy of improvisation made truly in that moment. New Year releases on Outside In Music on May 31, 2019.
